The Theater und Orchester Heidelberg is a five-division house with music theatre, concert, drama, dance and young theatre. It has existed since 1853 and has been extended and rebuilt several times. In 2012 the completely refurbished house, expanded by a large new hall, was reopened. Since 2005 the Philharmonic Orchestra of the city of Heidelberg has also belonged to the theatre and forms its own division with numerous concerts as well as the accompaniment of opera productions. The intendant since the 2011/12 season is Holger Schultze. The Theater und Orchester Heidelberg is, at 90–93 %, among the best-attended theatres in Germany and is the theatre with the most festivals in a single season. Besides over 1,000 performances annually, it hosts the Baroque festival Winter in Schwetzingen, the Heidelberg Stückemarkt and the Heidelberg Castle Festival, and biennially the Ibero-American theatre festival ¡Adelante! and the dance biennial. Besides the Marguerre hall, which seats 550, the theatre plays on various stages such as the Alter Saal, the Zwinger 1 and 3, and external venues in the urban space.
The Theater Heidelberg is one of the oldest continuously operated theatres in Germany — the tradition reaches back to 1853, when the City Theatre was opened in Classicist style.
