The Theater Görlitz, housed in the Neoclassical building of 1851 at Demianiplatz, is one of the easternmost German stages and part of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz-Zittau gGmbH. The three-genre stage with drama, music theatre, and ballet serves the region between Saxony, Czech Republic, and Poland, and is one of the most important cultural centres of Upper Lusatia. The house with around 580 seats maintains a repertoire that combines German classical theatre with contemporary drama and the promotion of Sorbian and Eastern European material. Despite its location away from major theatre centres, the house regularly attracts national attention through experimental productions and its function as a bridge between Central European theatre traditions.
Görlitz lies directly on the Polish border, and the Polish district Zgorzelec belonged to the city until 1945 — the theatre regularly stages cross-border German-Polish productions.
