The Theater Freiburg (sometimes also Stadttheater Freiburg, formerly Städtische Bühnen Freiburg) is the oldest and largest theatre in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. It is located at the edge of Freiburg's old town at the corner of Bertoldstraße and Platz der Alten Synagoge. The building unites three venues under one roof: the Großes Haus, the Kleines Haus and the Weltraum (called "Werkraum" until the 25/26 season). The Winterer foyer additionally hosts author readings, lecture evenings and chamber concerts. The theatre has been run as a municipal enterprise since September 2005. Its annual budget is financed overwhelmingly by the city and the state of Baden-Württemberg and amounts to around 32 million euros (as of 2019). Visitor numbers are around 190,000 per season. The origin of professional theatre in Freiburg lies in the visit of Marie Antoinette in May 1770 on the occasion of her bridal procession, for which the regional estates engaged the Korn theatre company. The performances took place in the theatre hall of the Jesuits' Gymnasium Academicum, the later Berthold Gymnasium.
The Theater Freiburg lies directly at Stadtgarten, one of the most beautiful inner-city parks in Southern Germany — the location has shaped the gastronomy and social meeting-place profile of the house for decades.
