The Theater Flensburg, founded in 1894, is the main venue of the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landestheater und Sinfonieorchester, a three-genre stage producing drama, music theatre, and ballet throughout Schleswig-Holstein. The house with around 700 seats, a historic Art Nouveau building, is also home to the Flensburg Symphony Orchestra. The venue serves not only Flensburg but also Schleswig, Husum, Rendsburg, and over ten other cities in Schleswig-Holstein. The German-Danish border location shapes the repertoire: the theatre regularly stages Danish works and cooperates with the Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester. The house ensemble produces about twenty premieres per season across all genres. Flensburg is Germany's northernmost city, and its Danish-German dual identity shapes the theatre.
Flensburg is the northernmost German large city — the Danish-German dual identity of the region has shaped the theatre for over 130 years.
