The Theater Erlangen was founded in 1719 as one of the oldest still-played city theatres in Germany and thus has an almost three-hundred-year tradition. The Markgrafentheater in the historic old town is the main venue and, with its tiered hall in the late Baroque style, is among the most beautiful small theatres in Bavaria. The intimate auditorium with just under 400 seats creates an immediate closeness between stage and audience. The Theater Erlangen focuses on spoken theatre with a broad repertoire from classics to contemporary premieres. Founded as the court theatre of the Bayreuth margraves, the institution developed in the 20th century into an important part of the Franconian cultural scene. The annual Erlangen festival of one- and two-person plays attracts artists and audiences from across the German-speaking world. The house works closely with the Friedrich-Alexander University and local theatre groups.
The Theater Erlangen is a drama theatre with three venues and host of the ARENA Festival Weeks, one of the most important festivals for young theatre in Germany.
