The Theater Erfurt is a publicly sponsored theatre of the Thuringian state capital of Erfurt. The main venue is the new building completed in September 2003 in the Brühlervorstadt district, situated between the cathedral hill and the Baroque fortress of the Petersberg. The theatre's programme concentrates on a broad music-theatre and concert offering on the Große Bühne with 800 seats and the studio stage with 200 seats. It is played by the theatre's own Erfurt Philharmonic Orchestra. Dance and drama guest performances are also offered. The Theater Erfurt is moreover the organiser of the annual Cathedral Steps Festival. From 1756 Erfurt made its Ballhaus and its garden pavilion — today's Kaisersaal on Futterstraße — available as a venue for travelling acting troupes. Since Erfurt, unlike Weimar and Gotha, was not a residence city, there was no institution that could have supported a permanent theatre. On the occasion of the Congress of Princes in 1808, Napoleon's court actors of the Comédie-Française came to Erfurt and performed before the crowned heads of Europe, among them the famous actor François-Joseph Talma and the violinist and composer Louis Spohr.
The Theater Erfurt opened in 2003 as a modern three-genre house with an unusual interior: the hall with 800 seats is asymmetrically shaped to ensure optimal acoustics and sightlines.
