The Theater Eisleben, the only professional theatre in the Mansfeld region, is a venue of the Mansfeld-Südharz theatre association. The house with around 320 seats maintains a concentrated programme of drama, concerts, and guest performances for the rural region between Halle and the Harz. Eisleben has unique cultural-historical significance as the birthplace and place of death of Martin Luther (born 1483, died 1546). His birthplace and place of death have been UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1996 — places that annually attract hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists. The theatre cultivates the Luther tradition with regular Reformation plays and historical-religious material. Martin Luther was both born and died in Eisleben, and his birth and death houses are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In Eisleben the Luther Trail ends each year — pilgrims from around the world reach the town on foot, and at Reformation time the theatre stages Luther plays especially for them.
