The Theater Duisburg, together with the Opera House Düsseldorf, is a venue of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, one of the most important opera companies in North Rhine-Westphalia. The 1912 Art Nouveau building on the edge of the city, with around 1,100 seats, is the more traditional of the two houses and shows the majority of the company's opera and ballet productions. The Duisburg Philharmonic forms the orchestra. The house is also used as a guest performance stage for international productions and regularly hosts major productions like Wagner cycles or contemporary opera premieres. Despite Duisburg's industrial location, the house has maintained an international reputation for over a century. As part of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Duisburg has shared its ensemble and orchestra with Düsseldorf since 1956.
The Deutsche Oper am Rhein is one of the few German opera cooperations between two major cities — Duisburg and Düsseldorf have shared the ensemble and orchestra since 1956.
