The Theater der Altmark, TdA for short, officially also Landestheater Sachsen-Anhalt Nord, is a theatre in the Altmark with its seat in Stendal. It is a regional stage with its own drama ensemble and productions in the areas of drama, children's and youth theatre, puppetry and music theatre. It employs around 70 staff and shows about 20 productions per season in over 500 performances, reaching more than 65,000 spectators annually. The Theater der Altmark has an audience-friendly programme. Fifty per cent of its performances are given at external locations: the theatre's catchment area covers the states of Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Thuringia and reaches into Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony. Every year in the summer months the theatre plays an open-air stage in Arendsee. In concert work the theatre cooperates with the Central German Chamber Philharmonic, in music theatre with the Nordharz municipal theatre. Regular guest performances by private and travelling stages in Stendal are documented as early as the mid-19th century. Towards the end of the 19th century the theatre hall of the "Hartje premises" established itself as a permanent venue.
The Theater der Altmark in Stendal is Saxony-Anhalt's touring theatre and serves the rural Altmark region with touring productions — a region between Magdeburg and Hamburg that would have little access to theatre without this touring stage.
