The Theater Chemnitz is a four-division theatre with opera, drama, ballet and figure theatre and is among the largest municipal theatre enterprises in Saxony. The opera house on the Theaterplatz was built in 1909 in the neoclassical style and is distinguished by its striking domed architecture. After destruction in the Second World War and extensive refurbishment from 1989 to 1992, it regained its historic form and is today regarded as one of the most beautiful opera houses in eastern Germany. The Robert Schumann Philharmonic, the orchestra of the Theater Chemnitz, bears the name of the composer born in Zwickau and is an important link to the regional musical history. The playhouse and the ballet also play in the opera house as well as in the Spinnerei as an alternative venue. The Theater Chemnitz is known for its cultivation of Schumann and Wagner as well as for an ambitious contemporary programme that repeatedly takes up the industrial history of the former Karl-Marx-Stadt.
The Chemnitz Opera House, opened in 1909, is one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau theatre buildings in Germany — the four-genre house with opera, drama, ballet, and Robert Schumann Philharmonic is Central Germany's cultural heavyweight.
