Theater Bremen

Bremen, Germany

The playhouse at Goetheplatz is the central venue of Theater Bremen for opera and drama. Theater Bremen has been known for decades for its decidedly political profile and its consistent promotion of new drama. The house made theatre history above all in the 1960s and early 1970s: the legendary "Bremen style stage" around artistic director Kurt Hübner gathered young directors such as Peter Stein, Peter Zadek, and Klaus Michael Grüber and set designers like Wilfried Minks, who from here revolutionised West German director's theatre. Many of these artists later became defining figures at the major houses in Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. To this day Theater Bremen sees itself as an experiment-friendly stage that weights risk and social relevance more highly than agreeable repertory routine.

The "Bremen style stage" of the 1960s is regarded as the birthplace of modern German director's theatre — from here Peter Stein and Peter Zadek conquered the major stages of the country.
