The Theater am Hagen in Straubing is the Lower Bavarian venue of the Landestheater Niederbayern and serves the region between Regensburg and Passau with music theatre and drama. The house with around 530 seats is performed by the Landestheater ensemble, which shuttles between Landshut, Passau, and Straubing, thus enabling professional repertory theatre in the rural Danube region. Straubing itself is one of the oldest cities in Bavaria with over 1,500 years of history; the historic old town with the city tower and the Ducal Palace forms an atmospheric setting for the theatre. The annual Gäuboden Folk Festival, the second-largest folk festival in Bavaria after the Munich Oktoberfest, supplements the cultural life of the city.
Straubing's Gäuboden Folk Festival is, after the Munich Oktoberfest, the second-largest folk festival in Bavaria — annually over 1.4 million people visit the ten-day event in August.
