The Theater Altenburg Gera has been since 1995 an association of the formerly independent theatres in Gera and Altenburg and forms the largest multi-genre theatre in Eastern Thuringia. The venue in Gera with around 880 seats was built in 1902 as the Reuss Theatre and is one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau theatre buildings in Germany. The three-genre house produces drama, music theatre, and ballet with its own orchestra (Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg-Gera). Despite the structurally weak region and repeated closure discussions, the house has preserved its national reputation for high-quality opera productions and an engaged drama repertoire. The painter Otto Dix was born in Gera in 1891, and the town honours his work in a dedicated house.
Otto Dix, the important Expressionist painter, was born in Gera in 1891 — the city cultivates his work in the Otto Dix House, right next to the theatre.
