Theater Altenburg

Altenburg, Germany

The Theater Altenburg is the second venue of the Theater Altenburg Gera association and is housed in the Neoclassical building erected in 1869 as the ducal court theatre. The hall with around 700 seats preserves the historic theatre architecture with three tiers of boxes. Altenburg, once residential city of the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, has a remarkably dense cultural landscape with Altenburg Castle and the Skat Museum (Altenburg is considered the birthplace of the Skat card game). The theatre cultivates a three-genre repertoire in association with Gera and is the cultural centre for the region between Leipzig and Chemnitz. Altenburg is the birthplace of the card game Skat, and the town treasures this heritage in its museum.
