The municipal Theater Aalen is a drama house in the eastern Württemberg mid-sized town, serving the region between the Swabian Jura and the Nördlinger Ries with professional spoken theatre. Despite its modest size, the house has earned a reputation as a committed promoter of new drama and regularly produces premieres of contemporary plays that radiate beyond their regional significance. Aalen lies on the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, the Roman frontier wall and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the theatre takes up both the ancient history of the region and current social themes. Through ensemble work, guest performances, and a pronounced connection to the town's community, it is the cultural centre of a wide rural catchment area in eastern Baden-Württemberg.
The Roman Limes runs beneath Aalen — during construction work around the theatre, archaeologists repeatedly came upon traces of the ancient frontier fort.
