The Estates Theatre (Stavovské divadlo) in Prague's Old Town is one of the oldest and culturally most significant theatres in Europe, world-famous above all as the site of the premiere of Mozart's Don Giovanni. Built in 1783 in the Classical style, the house was endowed by Count Franz Anton Nostitz-Rieneck and is among the few theatres from Mozart's time preserved largely in their original state. On 29 October 1787 Mozart himself conducted the premiere of Don Giovanni here; La clemenza di Tito was also premiered here in 1791. Today the elegant theatre, with its three-tier auditorium, belongs to the National Theatre Prague and presents opera, drama, and ballet.
Mozart is said to have written the "Don Giovanni" overture only the night before the premiere — the orchestra here reportedly sight-read it without ever having rehearsed.
