OPERA HOUSE

Prague State Opera

Prague, Czech Republic

The Prague State Opera (Státní opera) is one of the most important opera houses in the Czech Republic, located in the Vinohrady district near Wenceslas Square and the main railway station. Opened in 1888 as the "New German Theatre," the house was built by the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer in a sumptuous Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Rococo style and served as a stage for Prague's German-speaking population. Its festive auditorium, with rich gold and stucco decoration, is among the most beautiful in Central Europe. After an eventful history—including as the seat of the Czechoslovak State Opera—the lavishly restored house today belongs to the National Theatre Prague and is devoted above all to the Italian and German opera repertoire.
