The Smetana Hall (Smetanova síň) is the magnificent concert hall within the Obecní dům (Municipal House) on the Square of the Republic, immediately beside the Powder Tower. Built between 1905 and 1912, the Municipal House is the most important Art Nouveau building in Prague, with leading Czech artists such as Alfons Mucha contributing to its decoration. The hall, named after the composer Bedřich Smetana, with its imposing glass dome and rich Art Nouveau ornamentation, seats around 1,200. It is the traditional opening venue of the Prague Spring music festival, which begins each year with Smetana's cycle Má vlast (My Homeland). The Municipal House was also where the independence of Czechoslovakia was proclaimed in 1918.
In the same Art Nouveau municipal house, Czechoslovak independence was proclaimed in 1918 — the concert hall and the founding of the state share one roof.
