The Rudolfinum on Jan Palach Square by the Vltava is one of the most important concert houses in the Czech Republic and a landmark of Bohemian Neo-Renaissance. Opened in 1885 to designs by Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz—the same architects as the National Theatre—the building is named after Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria. Its magnificent Dvořák Hall is regarded as one of the acoustically finest concert halls in Europe and is the home of the Czech Philharmonic, which gave its first concert here in 1896 under Antonín Dvořák. The house is also the centre of the renowned Prague Spring music festival. Between the world wars it served for a time as the seat of the Czechoslovak parliament.
Between the world wars the Czechoslovak parliament met in the Rudolfinum — the concert hall served for a time as the plenary chamber of the young republic.
