Stadttheater Ulm

Ulm, Germany

The Theater Ulm, founded in 1641, is the oldest municipal theatre in Germany, in the Baden-Württemberg city of Ulm. It is run as a three-division house with its own ensembles for opera/operetta, drama and ballet. Until 2006 the house was called Ulmer Theater, also Städtische Bühnen Ulm. The building at Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz 1 was erected from 1966 to 1969 to plans by the architect Fritz Schäfer and opened on 3 October 1969 with 817 seats before the main stage and up to 200 seats in the studio theatre Podium in the basement. The earliest evidence of theatre performances in Ulm reaches back to the beginning of the 16th century, although scenic presentations from even earlier times are recorded. Between 1550 and 1650 comedy performance experienced its heyday.
