The Stadttheater Passau, housed in the building erected in 1783 as the Prince-Bishop's Opera House, is one of the oldest preserved theatre buildings in Bavaria and a venue of the Landestheater Niederbayern. The hall with around 500 seats preserves its Classicist character with three tiers. Unlike most city theatres, Passau does not maintain its own ensemble but is mainly performed by the Landestheater Niederbayern, supplemented by high-quality guest performances from the German-speaking region with a focus on drama, music theatre, and operetta. The unique location at the confluence of Danube, Inn, and Ilz and the historical connection to Vienna — Passau was for centuries the largest diocese of the Holy Roman Empire — shape the cultural identity of the house.
The theatre building was commissioned by Prince-Bishop Joseph Franz Anton Auersperg — Passau was then considered a cultural bridge between Bavaria and Austria.
