The Landestheater Schwaben, based in Memmingen, is a touring theatre for drama and music theatre serving the Swabian region of Bavaria as well as parts of Baden-Württemberg. The house with around 350 seats at Schweizerberg, a historic building, is the home venue; the ensemble tours through over 30 venues in Swabia. Despite the relatively small size of Memmingen (about 45,000 inhabitants), the theatre has supraregional significance and produces eight to nine premieres per season. Focus areas are contemporary drama and a distinctive children's and youth theatre programme. The theatre understands itself as a cultural bridge between Bavaria and Württemberg. Memmingen was a significant free imperial city, and its Twelve Articles of 1525 count among Europe's earliest declarations of human rights.
