The Stadttheater Landshut, the main venue of the Landestheater Niederbayern, is a two-genre stage with music theatre and drama in the heart of the Lower Bavarian residential city. The traditional theatre building at Bischofshof with around 470 seats has been rebuilt several times and has been the administrative seat and main stage of the Landestheater since its founding in 1952. The house ensemble produces about ten premieres per season with a focus on contemporary drama, classics, and operettas. Landshut itself, the former residence city of the Wittelsbach dynasty in Lower Bavaria, is with its well-preserved medieval old town and Trausnitz Castle one of the most beautiful cities in Bavaria — a historic setting that shapes the cultural identity of the theatre.
Landshut is famous for the Landshut Wedding, one of the largest historical folk festivals in Europe — every four years the marriage of the Wittelsbach Prince Georg to Hedwig of Poland in 1475 is reenacted in medieval costumes.
