The Stadttheater Konstanz, founded in 1607 as a monastic stage and under municipal ownership since 1948, is one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in the German-speaking region. The house with about 380 seats, housed in the historic Council building directly on Lake Constance, maintains a concentrated spoken-theatre repertoire with classics, contemporary drama, and material from the southern German-Swiss border region. The location on Lake Constance and the proximity to Switzerland make the theatre a cross-border cultural institution. Despite its relatively small size, the Stadttheater Konstanz has been one of the most interesting municipal stages in southern Germany for decades and is regularly represented in guest performance series.
The theatre performs in the historic Council building, where the Council of Constance met from 1414 to 1418 and Pope Martin V was elected — one of the most important events in church history.
