The Stadttheater Kempten, housed in a Classicist building erected in 1854 as a joint-stock theatre, is the central stage for the Allgäu region. The house with around 500 seats has been renovated several times; the hall preserves classical theatre architecture with tiered seating. Like many Bavarian mid-size city theatres, Kempten does not maintain its own ensemble but programmes high-quality guest performances by renowned touring stages from the German-speaking region with a focus on drama, music theatre, and dance. The Allgäu Festival Weeks, which take place annually in summer, supplement the programme with major musical events. Kempten is one of the oldest towns in Germany, attested in Roman sources of the first century.
Kempten is one of the oldest cities in Germany — the settlement of Cambodunum is documented in Roman sources from the first century AD.
