Stadttheater Gießen
MULTI-GENRE HOUSE

Stadttheater Gießen

Gießen, Germany

The Stadttheater Gießen is a three-genre house in Central Hesse with drama, music theatre, and ballet. The 1907 Art Nouveau building at Berliner Platz with around 600 seats was rebuilt in 1959 after wartime destruction. Despite the relatively small size of Gießen (about 90,000 inhabitants), the city has a full-fledged multi-genre theatre — a peculiarity owed to the university culture and the historical importance of the city as a university town. The house ensemble works with the Philharmonic Orchestra Gießen and produces about 14 premieres per season. The Junges Theater Gießen, an independent venue for children's and youth theatre, supplements the programme. Georg Büchner and Friedrich Hebbel both studied at the university in Gießen.
