The Stadttheater Freiberg, housed in the building erected in 1790 as a court theatre, is the main venue of the Mittelsächsisches Theater und Philharmonie gGmbH — a three-genre association with drama, music theatre, and ballet, which emerged in 1993 from the merger of the Stadttheater Freiberg and Döbeln. The house with around 380 seats has been rebuilt several times and retains its Classicist character. The house ensemble produces about ten premieres per season with a focus on contemporary drama and operettas, touring between Freiberg and Döbeln. Freiberg, an old mining city with UNESCO World Heritage status (Erzgebirge Mining Region), is one of the oldest mining cities in Germany; the Freiberg Mining Academy, founded in 1765, is the oldest university of mining sciences in the world.
Freiberg's Mining Academy is the oldest university of mining sciences in the world — Alexander von Humboldt and Novalis studied here.
