The Stadttheater Döbeln, housed in a Classicist theatre building, is the second main venue of the Mittelsächsisches Theater und Philharmonie gGmbH, the three-genre association that emerged in 1993 from the merger of the Stadttheater Freiberg and Döbeln. The house with around 290 seats is performed by the shared ensemble, which shuttles between Döbeln and Freiberg, thus enabling professional repertory theatre in the Central Saxon region between Chemnitz, Dresden, and Leipzig. Döbeln itself is a tradition-rich industrial city with a theatre history reaching back to the nineteenth century. Despite the relatively small size of Döbeln (about 23,000 inhabitants), the city preserves a remarkable cultural tradition with the Stadttheater.
Döbeln lies centrally between the three Saxon major cities Dresden, Leipzig, and Chemnitz — a geographical location that makes the theatre a regional bridge between three cultural centres.
