The Bremerhaven Municipal Theatre is a multi-division theatre founded in 1867 in the centre of Bremerhaven, with performances of opera, operetta, musical, ballet, drama and young theatre. The venue built in 1911 was completely destroyed in the heavy air raid on the night of 18 September 1944. Remains of the Art Nouveau façade were integrated into the theatre building newly constructed from 1950 to 1952, which was listed under Bremen monument protection in 1977. From 1999 to 2000 extensive extensions, conversions and modernisations of the entire complex with workshops and rehearsal stages were carried out. The history of Bremerhaven goes back to 1827, when the Bremen mayor Johann Smidt acquired a piece of land from the Kingdom of Hanover north of the mouth of the Geeste into the Weser and commissioned the construction of a harbour, because Bremen was no longer reachable for seagoing ships due to the river conditions. As early as around 1837 the first theatre performances took place in Bremerhaven through travelling acting companies. The Theater im Volksgarten had its first opera performance on 3 October 1849 with La dame blanche by François-Adrien Boieldieu.
The Stadttheater Bremerhaven is the only multi-genre theatre on the North Sea coast — Bremerhaven was the most important emigration port in Europe in the nineteenth century, and the theatre cultivates this maritime tradition.
