The Theater Bielefeld is one of the largest city theatres in North Rhine-Westphalia and a three-genre house with music theatre, drama, and ballet. The historic main building on Niederwall, an Art Nouveau structure from 1904 with a magnificent façade and richly decorated auditorium, seats around 850 and is among the most beautiful preserved theatre buildings in Westphalia. The Bielefeld Philharmonic forms the in-house orchestra. The ensemble produces about 15 premieres per season across all genres — remarkably high productivity for a mid-size city. Under director Michael Heicks (since 2010), the house has gained supraregional attention for ambitious opera productions and an engaged drama profile; the Theater am Alten Markt and the TAM serve as additional venues for experimental productions.
The Theater Bielefeld has maintained a special tradition since 2001: every New Year's Eve, Johann Strauss's operetta Die Fledermaus is performed.
