The Stadeum Stade, opened in 1982 as a cultural and conference centre, is the central stage of the Lower Saxon Hanseatic city between Hamburg and Cuxhaven. The theatre and concert hall with around 700 seats is used for drama, music theatre, concerts, and dance guest performances. Stade does not maintain its own ensemble but programmes high-quality touring productions from the German-speaking region with a focus on audience-friendly productions. The location in the well-preserved medieval Hanseatic city with the historic harbour gives the theatre an atmospheric setting. The Stadeum is also the central venue of the annual Stade Festival. Without its own ensemble, it programmes high-quality touring productions from across the German-speaking world.
Stade was one of the most important Hanseatic cities on the Lower Elbe in the Middle Ages and possessed more significant economic power than nearby Hamburg.
