Staatstheater Meiningen

The Meiningen State Theatre is a four-division theatre in the southern Thuringian district town of Meiningen. Until April 2017 the theatre bore the name "Das Meininger Theater – Südthüringisches Staatstheater" and thereafter, until 2021, "Meininger Staatstheater". Since the start of the 2021/2022 season the official designation has been "Staatstheater Meiningen". Colloquially the theatre is often called "Meininger Theater" or "Theater Meiningen". Today's building was opened in 1909 in the neoclassical style. The theatre's ensemble offers music theatre, drama, concert and puppet theatre. Attached to the theatre is also the Meiningen Court Chapel. The tradition-rich stage is jointly maintained under the umbrella of the Meiningen-Eisenach Cultural Foundation by the state of Thuringia, the city of Meiningen and the district. The house is the cradle of modern director's theatre as still practised today. At the end of the 19th century, as the Meiningen Court Theatre of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, it had made this profound theatre reform known through numerous guest performances throughout Europe, securing it a special position in the theatre world to this day.
