The Braunschweig State Theatre is among the oldest theatres in Germany and traces back to the opera house at the Hagenmarkt founded in 1690 by Duke Anton Ulrich — one of the first public opera houses north of the Alps. The present neoclassical main house on the Steinweg opened in 1861 and served as an architectural model for many later German court theatres. As a four-division house, the State Theatre unites opera, drama, dance, and concerts with the Braunschweig State Orchestra and plays across several venues throughout the city. The house gained historic significance through the premiere of Goethe's "Faust I" in 1829 — the world's first staging of the material ever, during the poet's own lifetime.
The 1829 Faust premiere was dared by a young director against Goethe's own resistance — the poet considered his work unstageable and was surprised it worked on stage.
