The Hanover State Opera is the opera house of the Lower Saxon state capital and has resided since 1852 in a neoclassical showpiece by court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. With this building and further works — including the Leineschloss and the Laveshaus — Laves lastingly shaped Hanover's cityscape and is regarded as the city's most important architect of the 19th century. The house on Opernplatz was rebuilt after wartime destruction and carefully preserves its representative neoclassical façade. As part of the Hanover State Theatres, the house is home to the Lower Saxon State Orchestra and produces a broad opera and ballet repertoire from Baroque to modernism with its own resident ensemble.
Architect Laves designed Hanover so comprehensively that one speaks of a "Laves Hanover" — the opera is the most magnificent surviving testimony to his urban vision.
