The Schwetzingen Palace Theatre, built in 1752 in the expansive palace garden of the Electoral Palatinate summer residence, is one of the oldest surviving tiered theatres in Europe. The intimate hall, in delicate Rococo, was built as the court theatre of Elector Carl Theodor, whose Mannheim court was then among the most splendid musical centres on the continent. Today the palace theatre is the central venue of the renowned Schwetzingen SWR Festival, which specialises in Baroque opera, Mozart, and contemporary music theatre. Its authentically preserved ambiance places the audience directly into the courtly theatre culture of the 18th century, making every visit a journey back in time to the heyday of Electoral Palatinate music-making.
The seven-year-old Mozart travelled through the Electoral Palatinate in 1763 and performed at the court of Carl Theodor — whose Mannheim orchestra was considered the best in Europe.
