The Schlosstheater Fulda, housed in the historic complex of the city palace, is the central stage of the East Hessian bishop's city. The house with around 850 seats, a building from 1925 with later extensions, programmes a multi-genre guest performance programme of drama, music theatre, concerts, and dance. Fulda does not maintain its own ensemble; the programming relies on high-quality touring productions from the German-speaking region. The city itself is culturally-historically significant as the burial place of Saint Boniface and seat of one of the oldest German bishoprics. The palace ensemble with the City Palace, Cathedral, and Palace Garden gives the theatre an atmospheric historic setting.
Fulda was one of the most important monastic centres in Central Europe in the eighth century — Saint Boniface, the Apostle of the Germans, is buried in Fulda Cathedral.
