The Schlosstheater Celle, housed in the west wing of Celle Castle, is the oldest continuously operating theatre building in Germany with its uninterrupted performance tradition since 1674. The Baroque hall with around 320 seats was established under Duke Georg Wilhelm of Brunswick-Lüneburg and preserves its historic character to this day with tiers of boxes and gilded decorations. Today's Theater Celle is a municipally supported drama stage with its own ensemble, producing about ten premieres per season. The unique atmosphere of the Baroque space combines with contemporary productions — a combination that regularly makes the house a popular festival venue. Schloss Celle, one of the oldest court theatres in Germany, has been in continuous use since 1674.
The Schlosstheater Celle has been in operation without interruption since 1674 — older than any other continuously operating theatre building in Germany.
