The Saarland State Theatre in Saarbrücken is the largest theatre in the Saarland and a four-division house with opera, drama, ballet, and concerts. The monumental building was erected in 1938 and is a testimony to the architecture of its time of origin — after 1945 the interior was redesigned democratically and the house became a symbol of the cultural new beginning in the border region with France. As a state theatre on the German-French border, it cultivates a special tradition of cultural exchange and regularly cooperates with French houses across the frontier. The Saarland State Orchestra belongs to the house, which with its location on Tbilisser Platz forms the cultural centre of the state capital.
The house lies only a few kilometres from France — many staff and visitors commute across the border, and the programme appears partly bilingually.
