The Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, under the sponsorship of the Bezirksverband Pfalz, is the only three-division theatre of the Palatinate, with its seat in the city of Kaiserslautern. The first theatre in Kaiserslautern was financed in 1862 by Andreas Müller, known as Spittelmüller, owner of the Spittelmühle in Kaiserslautern, who also supported the first seasons of this theatre. The building stood in today's Karl-Marx-Straße (then Theaterstraße) at the corner of Gasstraße. It was destroyed a few years later by fire and rebuilt by Andreas Müller. In 1874 the theatre was converted into a joint-stock company. The shares were taken over by the city of Kaiserslautern in 1897, making it a municipal theatre from then on. In the first decades of the 20th century the theatre grew, through cooperation with other Palatine stages, especially Pirmasens and Zweibrücken, into a municipal-union opera of the Palatinate. Operations were maintained even in the first war years of the Second World War, until the bombing raid of 14 August 1944 completely destroyed the building.
The Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern is the only four-genre theatre in Rhineland-Palatinate — it serves not only Kaiserslautern but the entire Palatinate region with opera, drama, ballet, and concerts.
