The Dortmund Opera is the opera house of the largest city in the Ruhr region and resides in a striking building from 1966 — one of the first dedicated new opera-house buildings in West Germany after the Second World War. The curved, shell-shaped architecture with its cantilevered roof construction is regarded as a testimony to the optimistic new departure of postwar modernism and is today a protected monument. As part of Theater Dortmund, the house unites opera and ballet under one roof and is home to the Dortmund Philharmonic. Shaped by the industrial history of the coal and steel city, the Dortmund Opera has established itself since the 2000s as one of the most distinctive houses for contemporary music theatre in the region.
The cantilevered concrete shell of the roof was considered a technical pioneering feat in 1966 — the architecture was meant to embody the mining city's departure into a modern future.
