The Konzerthaus Dortmund, opened in 2002, is among the most modern concert halls in Germany and has earned an international reputation with a special concept: each season the house names an "exclusive artist" who appears several times and builds a close bond with the audience — from Anne-Sophie Mutter to young rising stars. The outstanding acoustics and the engagement of world-class musicians as residence artists make the house a magnet in the Ruhr region. With its clear, elegant hall, the Konzerthaus Dortmund offers a programme from classical symphonic music through chamber music to jazz and world music and has established itself as a cultural flagship of a city that shapes its industrial transformation culturally as well.
Dortmund built the concert hall amid the structural change of the steel crisis — a deliberate signal that the former industrial city seeks its future in culture too.
