The Oldenburg State Theatre is the oldest theatre in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony. The publicly sponsored seven-division theatre offers performances of its own ensembles in the divisions of music theatre (opera/operetta/musical), drama, dance theatre (ballet), concert, children's and youth theatre, Division 7, and Low German drama in cooperation with the Low German Stage at the Oldenburg State Theatre, which plays exclusively in the Low German language, as well as numerous guest performances, readings, lectures and exhibitions. In the main building is the "Großes Haus", with 540 seats and 43 standing places for opera and drama and an additional 75 seats for concerts. After a conversion in October 1998, the Kleines Haus with 350 seats can also be found here. Since 2001 the Spielraum, a studio atelier seating about 80, has been reactivated. In addition, since 2008 the theatre has two further stages, located in Oldenburg's former drill hall at the Pferdemarkt. These stages are open above all to modern theatre forms and performances, with a capacity of about 100 seats per stage.
The Oldenburgisches Staatstheater opened in 1833 as the grand-ducal court theatre — the Classicist building in the palace garden preserves its historic architecture as one of the oldest preserved theatres in Lower Saxony.
