The Neues Theater Emden, housed in the theatre building erected in 1958, is the central stage of the East Frisian port city and is mainly used as a guest performance house for touring productions from the German-speaking region. The hall with around 700 seats offers a varied programme of drama, music theatre, concert, and dance. Emden is the westernmost large city of Lower Saxony and the cultural centre of East Frisia; the theatre understands itself as a connection between North German independence and supraregional cultural exchange. The house works closely with the Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord, which regularly guests in Emden and enriches the programming. Emden is one of Germany's oldest port towns, with a Hanseatic history reaching back to the 13th century.
Emden is one of the oldest port cities in Germany — its history as an important Hanseatic port dates back to the thirteenth century.
