The Neue Bühne Senftenberg, founded in 1946 as a touring theatre and based in Senftenberg since 1981, is the only professional drama theatre in the southern Brandenburg Lusatia. The house with around 350 seats, a modern building in Theaterpassage, maintains a concentrated repertoire with classics, contemporary drama, and material reflecting the Lusatia region and its structural change. The theatre understands itself as the cultural centre of a region shaped by the decline of the lignite industry. Senftenberg itself, with the Senftenberg Lake, a former open-pit mining lake, is a growing cultural location. The house ensemble produces eight to nine premieres per season. The Lusatia region is undergoing radical change as centuries of lignite mining come to an end.
