The Margravial Opera House Bayreuth, built between 1745 and 1750 under Margravine Wilhelmine, is one of the best-preserved Baroque theatres in Europe and has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2012. The interior, with its architecture entirely made of wood, three tiers of boxes, and opulent painting by Carlo and Giuseppe Galli da Bibiena, has been preserved almost unchanged since the eighteenth century. The house was reopened in 2018 after several years of restoration and is today used for historically informed performances of Baroque operas, concerts, and chamber music. The performance season is limited — the house primarily serves as a cultural monument — but the annual Bayreuth Baroque Festival and special guest performances offer audiences the opportunity to experience Baroque opera in its original space.
Margravine Wilhelmine, sister of Frederick the Great, was the patron and personally helped design the building — she was one of the most influential cultural patrons of her time.
