Landestheater Tübingen

The Landestheater Tübingen (LTT; full name: Landestheater Württemberg-Hohenzollern Tübingen Reutlingen) is a cultural institution in Tübingen financed by public funds, donations and admission fees. It performs predominantly its own productions, but also guest performances, some in foreign languages. Alongside the so-called evening programme it has its own children's and youth theatre division. The Landestheater tours Baden-Württemberg and other federal states with its productions on large and small stages, and with the Junges LTT also in educational institutions such as schools and kindergartens. The history of the theatre goes back to the post-war period. In 1945 a free theatre group gave rise first to the "Municipal Playhouse Tübingen", using the Schillersaal of the museum as its venue, a multi-purpose room also used as a cinema. In 1947 the towns of Tübingen and Reutlingen joined to form an association, and with the support of the then federal state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern the present Landestheater emerged from it in 1950. Thanks to the state's financial participation the theatre survived the critical years after the currency reform and began regular operations. For a long time, however, the theatre remained dependent on the museum as its venue, which was an enormous strain, as workshop, rehearsal and office space were lacking.
