The Landestheater Eisenach, founded in 1879, is part of the Landestheater Thüringen and produces drama and music theatre for Western Thuringia. The house with around 540 seats was built in 1879 as a city theatre and reopened in 2007 after extensive renovation. Eisenach has unique cultural-historical significance: birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685), site of Martin Luther's work during his stay at Wartburg (Bible translation 1521-22), and setting of Wagner's Tannhäuser. The theatre cultivates these traditions with a special focus on Bach festivities and Wagner performances. The house ensemble produces about twelve premieres per season. Wagner's Tannhäuser is partly set on the Wartburg above Eisenach, lending the theatre a special connection to the work.
Wagner's Tannhäuser is partly set at Wartburg above Eisenach — the theatre stages the work with a special cultural connection to the historic site.
