The Landestheater Detmold is one of the most important touring theatres in Germany, travelling with its productions through over 60 venues in Westphalia and Lower Saxony. The theatre, founded in 1825 and housed in the Neoclassical court theatre building, is a three-genre house with drama, music theatre, and ballet. With its Symphony Orchestra of the Landestheater, it has its own ensemble. The home theatre in Detmold with around 670 seats is the main stage; the touring activity makes it the cultural provider for rural regions that would otherwise have no access to professional repertory theatre. Artistic directors like Kay Metzger have established the house as a model for regional theatre. Despite the modest size of Detmold, the touring theatre ranks among the largest theatre enterprises in Germany.
Despite the size of Detmold (barely 75,000 inhabitants), the Landestheater is among the largest theatre enterprises in Germany — due to its constant touring activity.
