The Landestheater Coburg is a medium-sized three-division theatre (opera/operetta, drama, ballet), jointly maintained by the city of Coburg and the Free State of Bavaria. The neoclassical building on the Coburg Schlossplatz has 480 seats. On 13 May 2023 the Großes Haus closed for several years for a general refurbishment; the reopening will not take place before 2035. The interim venue has been the Globe Coburg at the Coburg freight station since October 2023. As a former residence city of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg, Coburg has an old theatre tradition. As early as 1630, under Duke Johann Casimir, the premiere of a musical work by his court conductor Melchior Franck took place in the Gymnasium Casimirianum. In the Baroque era, in 1684 under Duke Albrecht, the first Coburg court theatre opened, with a venue for 100 spectators in the upper hall of the armoury. Duke Ernst Friedrich rebuilt the Ballhaus into a playhouse in 1764. His son Franz Friedrich engaged various theatre groups on their tours through Germany, staging among others Mozart operas and plays by Schiller and Iffland.
The Landestheater Coburg, founded in 1827 as the court theatre of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, has close ties to the British royal family — Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, came from Coburg.
