The Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord, based in Wilhelmshaven, is a three-genre touring theatre serving the coastal region between East Frisia and the Weser estuary with drama, music theatre, and ballet. The main house with around 720 seats is the home venue; the ensemble tours through over 30 venues between Emden, Bremerhaven, and Cuxhaven. The Northwest German Philharmonic forms the orchestra. The Landesbühne is the cultural provider of a region that would have considerably less access to theatre without this touring stage. Wilhelmshaven itself is a North Sea port city and naval base; the maritime identity also shapes the theatre repertoire with North German material and plays about seafaring and coastal life.
Wilhelmshaven hosts the largest naval base in Germany — the city was founded in 1869 by King Wilhelm I as the Imperial War Harbour.
